Spotlight: Selected Charities
So our ultimate goal is to directly fund research and community projects as our own foundation. Nevertheless, we wanted to start making positive contributions right away so we’re diverting money to existing charities while we build our own. That way we’ll have some good fundraising traditions already going when we’re ready for our own grants!
Charitable giving can be tricky since the balance between maintaining the organization and carrying out its mission can be unclear. In other words, some money should go into paying staff, renting space, etc., but it has to be a sane amount that doesn’t interfere with the original goals of the charity. That said, the charities we’ve chosen are all very highly ranked on http://www.charitynavigator.org and we hope you’ll agree that they’re worthy causes to support.
Those of you who will be attending upcoming events, please think about where you’d like any contributions to go so we can direct your efforts in accordance with your wishes.
A Kids’ Brain Tumor Cure Foundation
From their mission statement:
- To accelerate the pace of promising scientific research for the most common forms of pediatric brain cancer by acting as a catalyst for individuals and corporations to initiate fundraising projects that will benefit targeted research studies.
- To identify a clear scientific research agenda for pediatric brain cancer and create opportunities for talented researchers and clinicians to apply for grant funding for startup, AS WELL, as follow through project monies.
- To act as a central resource and a portal for information for parents, patients, families, clinicians, researchers, specialists, and other non-profit institutions seeking information about the most common forms of pediatric brain tumors.
American Federation For Aging Research
AFAR’s Mission
The American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to support and advance healthy aging through biomedical research.
Key Initiatives
AFAR focuses its activities on these major initiatives:
- Identifying and funding a broad range of cutting-edge research most likely to increase knowledge about healthy aging.
- Attracting more physicians to specialize in geriatric medicine to meet the demands of an aging population with expert health care.
- Creating opportunities for scientists and clinicians to share knowledge and exchange ideas to drive innovation in aging research.
- Providing information to the public on new medical findings that can help people live longer lives, less susceptible to disease and disability.
American Psychiatric Association Foundation
We are on the verge of a national break-through in mental health awareness.
People see the profound impact of mental health on their lives, families and communities. Through the American Psychiatric Association Foundation’s community-based programs, fellowships, awards and grants, we address critical mental health needs and direct resources where they are needed most. All of our initiatives focus on one goal:
A mentally healthy nation for all.
Success is not simple, straightforward or sudden. Medical science, public education and dedication drive our vision of national awareness, personalized treatment and compassion. As the charitable foundation of the American Psychiatric Association, we:
- Raise awareness and overcome barriers.
- Invest in the future leaders of psychiatry.
- Support research and training to improve mental health care.
- Lead partnerships to address public challenges in mental health.
With the backing of the APA, the world’s leading psychiatric organization, our efforts are strengthened by research and designed to achieve results ensuring that we’re making real impact, every step of the way.
Children’s Miracle Network
More than 10 million kids enter a children’s hospital like Johns Hopkins Children’s Center across North America every year. To provide the best care for kids, children’s hospitals rely on donations and community support, as Medicaid and insurance programs do not fully cover the cost of care. Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has helped fill those funding gaps by raising more than $5 billion, most of it $1 at a time through Miracle Balloon icon campaigns. Its various fundraising partners and programs support the nonprofit’s mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.

Board Game Event Against Disease and Updates!
So with the gracious help of Canton Games, we are preparing for the first ever Board Game Event Against Disease. On April 7th, head over to Canton Games to stock up on all manner of worldly goods (they have board games, card games, used video games, and some related merch), where they will be dedicating a percentage of proceeds to one of our supported charities (you vote on your favorite.)
Later on, bring your sweet new games to the Knott conference center at Johns Hopkins Bayview (Red Awning Entrance, across from the MEC) for a night of gaming and fundraising. We’ll have details and advertising materials available soon, thank you all for your help in making this project a reality.
In logistical updates, I’ve found that the most straightforward path to our own community-integrated grantmaking will probably be starting a fund with the Baltimore Community Foundation. They require a minimum starting fund of $10,000, so everybody knows the score. It’ll take us some time to get there, but I believe we can make it happen.
The Big(?) Launch
This marks our initial push to do some good. We’re in talks to run some events in 2018 and will be letting everyone know as soon as there are some more details. Hope for tabletop gaming and concert events, and we’re always open to other ideas.
